[Heavy News 03.10.25] Weekend Releases: ENRAGEMENT (FIN), MODDER (BE) & BESTA (POR).
Guten Abend, Freunds!
Usually when I sign in with a preface on one of our multi-artist Heavy News articles, I’ll make the same broken-record commentary about how bewildered I am with how much great heavy/alternative music is consistently flooding our forever-besieged email inbox.
Naturally, having taken a few weeks off for some extensive travels of the Australian outback for Blacken Open Air 2025 (see our social media for a bunch of media related to this!), I feel it’s assumed knowledge that this is absolutely the case.
In my usual fashion when discussing a few releases at once, I also like to promote lesser-known artists.
I couldn’t possibly hope to include all the fantastic releases just from this week so, with the weekend now upon us I figured I’d focus on releases happening today/tomorrow/Sunday.
Melbournites, if you’re headed to see Ukrainian stoner/psych-rock legends Stoned Jesus at The Leadbeater Hotel, Richmond (a tour happening with thanks to heavy-meister Anthony of Your Mate Bookings - tickets available here), myself and Richie Black will be there on writing/photography duties respectively. Come say hi, we don’t bite! Gig Review will be out soon afterwards.
Until then, we at ISC have the skinny on the following weekend releases:
Enragement - Extinguish All Existence (Transcending Obscurity Records; out Today): Finnish brutal death metal FFO: Cutterred Flesh, Devourment, Abominable Putridity, Blood Red Throne, Katalepsy, Benighted, Aborted et al. Super-heavy, super fast, super Suomi.
Modder - Destroying Ourselves For A Place In The Sun (Consouling Sounds/Lay Bare Recordings; out Today): Belgium industrial-tinged psychedelic sludge, prev. featured on Doomed and Stoned: The Instrumentalists Vol 1
Besta - John Carpenter Redux (Raging Planet Records; out Tomorrow): Portuguese grindcore inspired by the film-score legend himself! A self remaster/re-recording of a 2013 release, originally unleashed by Steve Austin (Today Is The Day).
If what you’ve perused here piques your interest, be sure to follow through those artist links to support three international heavyweights! Happy listening, and have a great weekend.
Peace, Love and Grindcore xoxo - Brady.
Enragement (FIN) - Extinguish All Existence
Artwork by Daemorph Art (Cephalotripsy, 7 H.Target)
Enragement from Finland are playing brutal death metal that's humongously heavy and also incredibly varied. Not too unlike their label mates Cutterred Flesh, they are borrowing elements from associated styles and mixing it all up. The result is an invigorating, powerful expression that ticks all the boxes.
Their brutal death metal isn't the kind where you hear one song, you get the gist of the entire album because they're all just variations of the same rigid song type. Enragement in fact take the effort to approach songs differently each time, intermingling stirring melodies with heaving slams and everything in between. They aren't trying to be unnecessarily technical or flashy either; rather they are ensuring that the perfect expression is achieved and emphasis is given where needed, be it for solos or breakdowns. In simple words, this is as well-rounded a brutal death metal album as it can be when it comes to this obscene level of heaviness without the music getting dumbed down.
Enragement have struck the right balance here, making their album satisfying, interesting, and also hugely enjoyable.

Modder - destroying ourselves for a place in the sun
Ghent’s psychedelic sludge quintet Modder return with their third full-length, Destroying Ourselves for a Place in the Sun, set to be released on October 3rd, 2025 via Consouling Sounds and Lay Bare Recordings.
With riffs designed to snap necks, thunderous basslines, grooving drums, and industrialist samples woven into synth-driven textures, Modder have carved a unique place in the sludge/doom scene.
Following their widely praised 2022 album The Great Liberation Through Hearing, the band push their sound even further. Destroying Ourselves for a Place in the Sun refines the balance between crushing sludge heaviness and otherworldly psychedelic electronics, where brute force collides with haunting atmosphere.
The album features six tracks that flow from suffocating riffs to hypnotic electronic flourishes, offering a journey both visceral and cerebral.

BESTA - John Carpenter Redux
Portuguese grindcore masters BESTA return this autumn with John Carpenter Redux, set for release on October 4th via Raging Planet in an exclusive limited vinyl edition.
Originally unleashed in 2013 and mixed by Steve Austin (Today Is The Day), the record has been completely re-mixed and reimagined by the band itself, with long-standing frontman Paulo Rui re-recording all vocals to deliver the most unhinged and powerful version to date.
As the ultimate homage to the master of horror, John Carpenter Redux bridges the worlds of feral grindcore and politically charged punk, channelling the same tension, anger, and resistance that fuel many of Carpenter’s timeless films. It’s raw, uncompromising, and loaded with razor-sharp urgency, a soundtrack to chaos that feels both cinematic and confrontational.
This is BESTA at their fiercest: a band with over a decade of grinding, raging, and raging against the system, now paying tribute to one of cinema’s most visionary rebels.
