Tonight, we are off to see The Black Crowes at The Forum. It’s been just over 3 years since the brothers Robinson, Chris and Rich have been back.

Touring for the release of their latest record, A Pound of Feathers on their own label, Silver Arrow Records, this show is set to already be a highlight of the year. The turnout is good for night; one of the two-night set of shows with The Southern River Band.

The Southern River Band (Perth, AU)

Getting the night started is Perth legends The Southern River Band. These guys never disappoint. Fronted by vocalist Cal Kramer, they worked through a solid, catchy, unpretentious set of Aussie rock’n’roll.  Cal talks to the crowd like he’s chatting to a mate.

How ya going, Melbourne?” - the crowd responded very well. Looking around, there were punters who were experiencing the guys for the first time, taking it all in, unsure as to who exactly they were indeed experiencing at first. By the end? It’s safe to say that there are now some new followers.

The AC/DC is strong with these guys. All this and ripping guitar solos too!

Give Southern River Band more love! They deserve it.

The Black Crowes (USA)

The set opened with ‘Profane Prophecy’, from their latest release Pound of Feathers. This is an awesome rock-n-roll track, with shades of Rolling Stones.

Help yourself Melbourne, help yourself, it’s a rock-n-roll show!” was uttered by frontman Chris Robinson, moments before blazing through a killer set of both classics and soon-to-be-classics.

The new material was welcomed easily by one packed crowd at The Forum. Their setlist offered a diverse collection from their back-catalogue, with ‘Sting Me’, ‘Thick n Thin’, ‘Twice as Hard’ and even a return to ‘Movin’ on Down the Line’.

Next up was another new song, ‘Pharmacy Chronicles’. It’s Southern, it’s acoustic, it’s electric with a sound that’s old and new at the same time. Slide-guitar and the classic Hammond organ ringing through, that will make it a favourite.

Returning to the set was ‘My Morning Song’, which was very well received. The vibe kept rolling with, Soul Singing and the certified crowd favourite, She Talks to Angels

The rock n roll continued with ‘Bedside Manners’, ‘Wiser Time’ and another favourite, ‘Hard to Handle’. Sometimes ‘Salvation’ and ‘Thorn in My Pride’ followed.

Then, to the song that started it all - ‘Jealous Again’.

Staying on a high to the end, the Crowes finished with ‘Remedy’ before returning for an encore with ‘Three Button Hand Me Down’, by The Faces.

The Black Crowes’ sound has managed to span multiple generations of fans, and clearly demonstrated from tonights’ set that there’s still very much a place for rock-n-roll.
