[PODCAST] 50th Episode Special: [Interview] w/ DAN CATANIA of HEADBANGERS AUSTRALIA.
Wow, huh?
50 episodes. What a milestone!
You’ll see a lot of statistics claimed online roughly around the 60 to 80 percent mark, with a 3-6 month timeframe. What’s the statistic in question? The percentage of podcasts that fade into radio silence within that time. (Here’s an example link citing said stats, noting that these are often thrown about without an empirical backing).
Irrespective of the veracity of these claims, you only need to skim various podcast hosting platforms or streaming services to see this in action.
Whilst the long-form topical episodes have had a bit of a dropoff with my transition into managing a team here, as well as recently opening my own small business, the podcast’s done solo, and I’m proud to have reached this milestone.
I’m grateful for everyone who’s ever taken out their time to join me on the mic, to read any of our articles, reviews, interviews, Riffs, etc.
I’m grateful for so many chats with such esteemed luminaries of the creative arts on this, a humble hobby podcast/blog situated in the Galactic Outer Rim of the content-creatorverse.
I’m grateful for the feedback, grateful for the special opportunities provided to us by way of gig reviews, interviews, promotional/press releases and the like.
Thanks for being here, and tuning in. I know I’m not the next Jordan Harbinger in terms of production, polish or heck, probably even interviewing skill. I know the modern attention-economy demands more of you than ever, as well as the relentless demands of Whatever The Hell The 2020’s Are, Really.
So, before I launch into a brief housekeeping about future podcast episodes, and introduce today’s special guest, in summation I’ve only two words for my hardworking team of contributors, co-hosts, guests, bands, artists, everyone:
Thank You.
Originally, I’d planned to do one of my next bigger/more in-depth non-interview topics such as Behind Screen and Speaker 2025 or Part 3 of the Xenomorph Examination audiodrama series, but those can wait.
Partly, those can wait because there’s an inconceivable amount of research and notes going into both, and I need the time. That’s fine, I’m on my own dime (or lack thereof, this is creative industry press after all).
Nay, those two can wait because I’ve had a conversation with someone, namely one Dan Catania of Headbangers Australia, last night. Our discussion couldn’t be more relevant to the ethos of this podcast, nor our tagline ‘Hobbies, Riffs, Mental Health’.
Earlier this year, after a lengthy spell of horrible luck with both my own mental health and the most strangely poor response I’ve had from the job market in 20+ years of working life, I was at a crossroads. Dan was also facing similarly challenging circumstances in his own personal life, of course not in a way that either of us would play a comparison game for.
Where I’ve opted down a brave enough but frankly lesser path of resistance with my own business, Dan represents the other side, the other fork in the road.
Man’s pulled the trigger, doubled-down and gone all-out in his expansion from solo content-creator to now creator of an entire music industry platform providing professional management and media services.
This chat has a lot of realism about the current music industry climate, and we do discuss mental health concerns in overarching detail, but there’s also hope, passion, optimism and perseverance. Qualities I see endlessly in my interviewees, irrespective of the lame-duck Reagan-era tropes about heavy and alternative music, and alternative culture in general.
Dan, thank you for sharing in such depth around many personal and professional music experiences.
If you’re thinking of having a crack at ‘making it’ in the music industry proper, this is one for you in particular. But, I think anyone with an interest in creative arts/industry will enjoy this one.
Peace, Love and Creative-Entrepeneur-Core xoxo, Brady.
